"The car has been renovated gradually starting in 1984 and continuing until the late 1990s. Exempt from inspection and ready to drive. A car that appeals to most people."

Description

The car was purchased new by the vocational teacher Sam Engman, residing in Strömsund. He received the car already in the fall of 1968. The car had the famous PV warranty, which meant that Volvo covered the cost if the car was damaged due to external accidents or damage within 5 years from the delivery date. This insurance was valid in Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark, as well as in Iceland. The car has had 6 registered owners, the last 2 of whom were within the same family.
When the car was delivered new, it was equipped with a B20 engine and a standard four-speed m40 gearbox. An electric overdrive was later retrofitted.
The engine was replaced by a later owner with a tuned B18 engine with close-ratio gearbox. Between 1983 and 2009, the car was owned by Mr. Westlin in Strömsund. He had the car repainted, but first he disassembled it and replaced everything that showed the slightest wear. Everything that needed to be replaced and more was bought from the local Volvo dealer in Strömsund or from Veteranprodukter. It was preferably original Volvo down to the smallest screw. He kept meticulous records of all actions in his binder, as a historical document and also an exciting history of the renovation. This binder, including inspection protocols from the vehicle inspection, instruction manual, and PV warranty certificate, accompanies the car. See the pictures for a selection of documents. The odometer reads 65 040 km, and reportedly has turned over. so the total distance could be 165 040 km. This was before the renovation, thereafter it has been driven sparingly.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine was replaced for a factory tuned B18D sports engine with oil cooling, dual SU carburetors, and extractor manifold, reportedly equipped with trim kit no. 419398 from Volvo Competition Service according to the owner. In this configuration, the engine output is claimed to be 135 horsepower. (Read the owner's story for more information.) The gearbox is a close-ratio four-speed gearbox designed for racing (m40G). The car is also equipped with sports springs. Original springs and matching shock absorbers are included, as well as the overdrive gearbox for those who prefer smoother driving with lower engine speeds. See the image.

  • Interior condition:

Very nice and well-maintained interior. Original headliner has a few occasional marks. The front seats are equipped with chrome folding brackets that were used on the sport and 123GT models, and were also available as optional equipment. The tachometer is a Volvo-branded Smith type, similar to the one used in the 123GT. The rubber mats are original Volvo mats purchased new in 1993 and are still in excellent condition. Also equipped with Volvo floor mats. The trunk lid is also equipped with the coveted rubber mat in fantastic condition. Instrument padding without any issues.

  • Exterior condition:

Professionally repainted in the 1990s in its original color. Bumpers and chrome trims in very good condition. Equipped with period-correct Marschal extra lights, one curved and one remote light. Very clean undercarriage treated with tectyl after renovation, according to notes also rust protected inside the beams. The car is equipped with 5.5-inch wide steel rims with new 165/80-15 tires. The owner has also acquired brand new Berzetta American 17-inch chrome rims which are included. (See the pictures.)

  • General condition:

A proper Amazon with a sporty and potent drivetrain. Overhauled and renovated over a series of years to its current very fine condition.

Owner's comment

My father bought the car in 2009. The previous owner, Mr. Westlin, had owned the car since 1983. He was a meticulous and knowledgeable car enthusiast who disassembled the Amazon into parts and renovated it. He kept a diary of every little screw he replaced during the renovation. A complete folder with notes and receipts is included. It can be seen that most of the parts are Volvo Original purchased from Volvo in Strömsund. For example, the front rubber mat, which was purchased in 1993 and at that time cost 2700 kronor. The engine is built with Volvo's Stage 1 tuning kit for the B18. Part number 419398. This includes, among other things, a cylinder head with higher compression, a different camshaft, extractor manifold, and oil cooling. The gearbox is a close-ratio M40 gearbox, also designed for racing use. An OD gearbox is included for those who want lower engine speeds during highway driving. The correct driveshaft for the overdrive is also included.

Facts about the model

During the 1960s, the Amazon was Volvo's volume car and a significant success in several export markets. In 1966, the Volvo 140 was introduced, but the Amazon continued to be manufactured until 1970. Over the years of production, various modifications were made to the Amazon, but the basic form remained consistent throughout the 14 years of production. Among the updates in the final model years were the following: Steering wheel for the adjustable lumbar supports in the front seats, a new impact-absorbing steering wheel with a recessed hub for improved driver safety, power-assisted brakes on all models, and a dual-circuit braking system, new sun visors with more padding, and a split steering column for improved driver safety. The last Swedish-manufactured Amazon rolled off the production line in July 1970. It was dark blue, had chassis number 359726, and was driven directly to Volvo's museum.
In total, 667,791 Amazons were produced between October 1956 and July 1970. (However, Volvo's official figure is 667,323 cars.)
